To no one's surprise, the top album of the year, with 8.01 equivalent album units (with 7.441 million of that figure in traditional album sales), is Adele's "25," released on XL Recordings/Columbia Records. It's important to note that the album accomplished this with only 6 weeks on sale, as the set was released on November 20th of last year. This also makes the record the youngest year-end best seller in history. The album has been a real force of nature, after having had less than 5 weeks of promotion prior to its release yet still debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 with record breaking sales of 3.378 million copies (the highest one week sales for an album since Nielson Music began collecting point of sale data for recorded music in the United States from retailers in 1991), smashing the previous 15 year record record of 2.416 million held by *NSYNC which they set in March of 2000, powered by the strength of its lead single "Bye Bye Bye," released in January of that year. "25" also became the first album to have multiple million-selling weeks, a feat it accomplished in its second week and extending in its fifth week of retail availability, with sales of 1.11 million and 1.16 million, respectively. It's the third time the 27 year old British singer has had the best seller for a calendar year following her second studio album "21" selling 5.824 million in 2011 and 4.414 million in 2012. She additionally becomes the first artist to triple up on have the top selling album in a calendar year since Nielsen Music'a first full year of tracking in 1992. "25" is also the second largest selling album in a calendar year by a female artist in all of Nielsen Music's history, second only to "Oops!... I Did It Again" by Britney Spears in 2000 when it achieved sales of 7.89 million during the year. This year's year end chart of the past year's top seller sees many familiar faces. As previously mentioned, this marks the third time that Adele has visited the region. Taylor Swift, who sits at no.2 on this year's list, has now made the list for the seventh time, with the first time being in 2007 after her self-titled debut album (released the prior year) came in at no.8 on the year-end tally with 1.951 million sold. She followed with "Fearless," in 2008 (no.3, 2.112 million) and 2009 (no.1, 3.217 million), "Speak Now" in 2010 (no.3, 2.96 million) and "Red" in 2012 (no.2, 3.107 million). Canadian singer Justin Bieber has now made the list for the fourth time, following a two year absence. His latest release. "Purpose" finishes at no.3 after selling 1.269 million last year. He last visited for 3 consecutive years in 2010 (no. 4, "My World 2.0"-2.319 million), 2011 (no.8, "Under The Mistletoe,"-1.245 million) and 2012 (no.6, "Believe"-1.324 million). Fellow Canadian recording act Aubry Drake Graham, better known simply by his middle name 'Drake,' has now made the tally four times. His mixtape, "If You're Reading This It's Too Late," finishes the year at no. 5 with 1.142 million. He has previously visited the region with his debut full length in 2010 (no.8, "Thank Me Later"-1.269 million), in 2011 with his second studio album (no.7, "Take Care"-1.247 million) and in 2013 with his as of now last record to be officially promoted as a proper album, "Nothing Was The Same" (no.7, 1.344 million). English blue-eyed soul crooner Sam Smith, who made it all the way to no.3 in 2014 with sales of 1.210 million for his debut album "In The Lonely Hour," revisits at no.6 with 1.018 million copies sold in 2015. A Georgia-native, County singer Luke Bryan, who rounds out the top 10 at no.10 with "Kill The Lights" (851,000), has entered the region twice before; the first time being in 2012 with "Tailgates & Tanlines" (no.1.105 million) and the second the following year with "Crash My Party" (no.3, 1.521 million). Newcomers to the tally include English pop/folk singer Ed Sheeran (no.4, "X"-1.162 million) American doo-wop/pop singer Meghan Trainor (no.7, "Title"-1.007 million) and Canadian alternative R&B/pop singer The Weeknd (no.8, "Beauty Behind The Madness"-862,000).
